National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (NaUKMA) is a classic, prestigious research university recognized by the international academic community, which creates, preserves and disseminates knowledge in natural, social, humanitarian and technical scientific fields. We set and maintain the highest standards in research, teaching and learning. Plagiarism and any manifestations of corrupt behaviour are absolutely unacceptable for Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.
Kyiv-Mohyla Academy is primarily a community of scientists, educators, students, employees, graduates and friends of the university. People of different cultures and origins who form highly educated, nationally conscious, honest, caring and creative individuals, able to think independently and act according to the principles of goodness and justice, for the development of an open and democratic society. The Kyiv-Mohyla community is a centre of independent intellectual thought and an active part of the civil society of independent Ukraine. We defend the right to our own opinion, to speak critically about the authorities’ actions, as well as about the processes taking place in Ukrainian society. We suggest and initiate changes aimed at the development of the country. We strive for every representative of the Academy to develop as free, educated, responsible and creative individuals. Our students receive professional training in the state language and in English, as well as in other foreign languages.
Kyiv-Mohyla Academy as an institution adheres to the principles of humanism, protects people and humanity, defends human dignity, rights and freedoms. These are not just nominal slogans, our educators have a human-centred focus, treat students with respect and pay attention to their feedback. We create a friendly atmosphere in relations between teachers, students and employees, create space for development and encourage creative search, introduce innovative ideas and solutions that help to perform tasks in non-standard methods. For example, historically, Bachelor's, Master's and PhD programs have appeared in the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy much earlier than in other universities. So NaUKMA both borrows the best solutions from abroad, such as mobility programs, exchanges, internships, campuses, and designs its own student-oriented solutions. Liberal Arts is a fundamental principle of education at the Academy, that gives students the opportunity to acquire not only a set of knowledge but also a number of competencies which allow them to be flexible, creative and adapted to the globalized and changing labour market. NaUKMA is a leader in innovation and actively influences the future of Ukrainian society and the state. The university organically combines scientific activity, the educational process and the acquisition of the highest quality practical skills. The atmosphere of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy encourages the development of personal leadership, responsibility and a sense of civic duty.
University educators are role models and mentors for many. They construct Ukrainian education, science and other fields of activity proactively and responsibly. Individual interaction with teachers in the framework of writing scientific papers is especially highly valued by students because it is live and direct communication.
The Academy actively works for the development of Ukraine. We are patriots of Ukraine, and we support the Ukrainian language. At the same time, respect for other cultures, traditions and languages are important components of our identity. Democracy, openness, transparency, decentralization, inclusiveness, opposition to manifestations of authoritarianism, the right and attention to criticism are the basic principles of the Academy. We protect academic freedom, critical and independent thinking.
The Academy operates academic mobility (exchange) programs for Bachelor's, Master's and PhD students, whose mobility is a useful foreign study and internship experience. Students of the Department of Sociology use the mobility program every year and gain valuable experience at the best universities in the world.
Students of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy draw up their individual study plans independently. Every year, students draw up their own plan for mastering disciplines, to which they add normative academic disciplines and selected elective courses. Therefore, students can choose courses from other departments and faculties. Therefore, while studying at the Department of Sociology, you can choose courses from the Department of Cultural Studies, Political Science, Law, Marketing, and others.
We defend the right to our own opinion, to speak critically about the authorities’ actions, as well as about the processes taking place in Ukrainian society.
The ‘Invisible Battalion’ global advocacy project began with researching and documenting the participation of Ukrainian women in the war against the Russian army of occupants.
A sociological survey conducted by the ‘Invisible Battalion’ team in late 2015 uncovered that outdated legislation allowed women to hold administrative positions such as signals, cooks, tailors, and such, while those women were on the front line. However, it was almost impossible for them to get a combat position. For this reason, women who volunteered often found themselves outside legal protection did not have access to adequate social security, and could not be nominated for military awards.
In consequence of the research and the advocacy campaign, a number of orders issued by the Ministry of Defence, expanded the list of combat positions for women, which they actually held during the anti-terrorist operation.
